On May 10, 2023 the top three students from the graduating class in every HCPS school were invited to the Harford County Delegation to the General Assembly.

Representing the Hawks, Tyler Huneke, Jeremy Jestel, and Sierra Wendland. However, only Jestel and Wendland were able to attend the ceremony.

According to Wendland the event “was a very brief ceremony where” “fancy snacks” were served and each student was invited “to go up front and say their name, school, family they brought, what college they’re attending and major.” Wendland added that each student received two certificates. One certificate read, “Maryland House of Delegates” and the other, “The Senate of Maryland.” The senior expressed that even though “it was nice to be recognized”, “a scholarship would have been much more appreciated.” She claimed that the politicians may have just been “using” the students so “they can say that they support education.”

Tyler Huneke was unable to attend the ceremony that evening to accept his certificate, so his classmates ended up accepting it for him.

Attending the “dinner and dessert” ceremony were Harford County house of “delegates and some state senators” according to Jestel. He also received an award from “both the Harford County House of Delegates and the state senate.”
