Friday the 13th

One theory about the origin of Friday the thirteenth suggests that people combined the belief that Friday is an unlucky day and that 13 is an unlucky number to conclude that Friday the thirteenth is an unlucky date.

According to wikipedia.com, Friday was determined to be an unlucky day because Christians recognize the crucifixion of Jesus on the Friday before Easter. Spanish speaking countries believe that Tuesday the thirteenth is unlucky and the Italians think that Friday the seventeenth is unlucky in a similar way that Friday the thirteenth is looked upon in America.

The notion of Friday the thirteenth was not widely believed until the twentieth century. Friggatriskaidekaphobia is the fear of Friday the thirteenth.  According IMBD.com, there is even an American horror franchise called Friday the thirteenth that includes 12 slasher films, a TV show, novels, and comic books. The main character and murderer in these movies is always Jason and he is famous for the hockey mask that he wears.

“It’s Friday the 13th! I better cancel my eyebrow waxing. I’m not superstitious, but there’s no reason to ask for trouble,” tweeted Ellen DeGeneres on Friday 13, 2013.
