October is breast cancer awareness month and many teams from the Hawk Nest have taken part in supporting cancer patients and survivors.
The varsity girls volleyball team, coached by Wendy Feight-Edmonds, is participating in a service learning project. The team is getting everyone involved by collecting items from each grade at the high school, as well as from North Harford Middle School students. The items collected will be made into care packages and sent to the chemo center at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for patients, according to the junior team member Jess Gerhardt. The team has continued to show support by wearing pink socks and bows to their games.
Gerhardt loves showing support to cancer patients and says, “It is cool to see other teams participating in breast cancer awareness month.”
The JV girls soccer team, coached by Ora Cummings, has also participated in breast cancer awareness month. Sophomore captain Chloee Roberson talked about her team wearing pink on their game days to support breast cancer patients. Roberson stated she “was inspired by a family member” to take part in the awareness month. She added other teammates were also inspired by loved ones to participate. Roberson has enjoyed participating and has said they will continue to show their pink pride through the month of October.
The Cross Country team, coached by Laura O’Leary and Mr. Tim Dougherty, has participated in supporting cancer patients. Senior Chris Robinson’s dad was diagnosed with Lymphoma early in the season. To support Chris and the Robinson family, the team has worn lime green ribbons, said senior captain Cassidy Chandler. Chandler added that “a parent made green ribbons for each of us to wear in support of Robinson’s family.” Chandler also stated the team will continue to support Robinson’s family and hope to also support breast cancer patients throughout the rest of the month.
Teams from North Harford continue to show support to those affected by cancer.
