Recently the on-going buzz about the release of the live-action cast for my personal favorite Disney movie Tangled has social media on a frenzy. On January 7,2026 Disney announced the lead cast for the live-action Tangled, Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider. The news broke across outlets like Teen Vogue highlighting the media outrage and excitement over director Michael Gracey, whose past work includes the musical The Greatest Showman and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson known for writing screen play.
After the ups and downs of Disney’s live-action adaptations that include Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Lilo & Stitch, and Moana viewers and Disney lovers have made it clear, as stated on a social media post “why bother making another unnecessary live action when the original is perfect?” a clear line between die hard disney fans excited for the live-action, and fans who so far dislike the idea of an already perfect movie being ruined by over exaggerated animations and unrealistic story lines that don’t resemble the original.
The original Tangled is a modern animated fairy tale whose captivating twist comes from its stylized visuals, emotional exaggeration, and a coming of age story, elements that make it nostalgic and impactful. Tangled depends on exaggeration, with Rapunzel’s beautiful long hair, glowing colors, and heightened emotions that animation allows. These elements allow for the nostalgia and warmth that a live-action often has to restrain due to realism.
Personally, with Tangled being one of my favorite Disney movies, I would hate to see it be changed or for a live-action to ruin the magic that it had when I first watched it as a kid. Several students are debating whether or not the casting will do the characters justice, or if it will just be another of Disney’s failed attempts. My overall thoughts on the live action would be that it would probably take away from the magic it had when I watched it as a kid
