Baltimore walks to fight cancer

Camden Yards is normally packed with loud, sweaty fans cheering for their beloved Orioles. But on September 14, the stadium will be packed for a much different purpose.

The 1st annual Breathe Deep Baltimore 5K walk through Camden Yards will be taking place in order to raise money for critical lung cancer research.

Started in 2008 the walk takes place in honor of Betsy Hamer who lost her life after a four year battle with cancer. Her youngest daughter, Cindy Malloy organized the first LUNGevity event, the organization that supports Breathe Deep Baltimore, called Breathe for Betsy on the Boardwalk.

The original event blossomed over the years and now involves hundreds of people walking together to fight cancer. Breathe Deep Baltimore is the 6th LUNGetivity event to raise money for lung cancer research.

Even North Harford students are glad to see that such an event is taking place.

“It’s so inspiring to see that many people devoted to fighting cancer. My family has been affected by cancer and it’s heartwarming to see that we aren’t alone and we are always supported,” Said senior Ross Jarrar.

Awards will be given out to the top two individual fundraisers as well as the top two fundraising teams which consist of 4 or more walkers.

“I think it’s a good way to earn more money for finding the care that can also benefit the people who are participating in the walk,” said senior Calen Dowley.

The path for the walk is wheel chair and stroller friendly and there will be refreshments and a kids area provided at the event.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and end at 12 p.m. and hundreds of teams have already signed up for the event. The event will take place rain or shine.

On top walk, there will be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle to help raise money for the cause.

LUNGetivity also has events similar to Breathe Deep Baltimore in Salt Lake City and other places across the country. All information on upcoming events is featured on Lundetivity.org.
