Harford County’s new Cancer Center

Cancer: the disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in part of the body, sometimes resulting in malignant growth.Upper Chesapeake Health Center is currently constructing the Patricia D. and M. Scot Kaufman Cancer Center. The building’s grand opening is October 7, 2013.

“Built by our neighbors, for our neighbors,” Upper Chesapeake’s website adorns.

In 2009, Upper Chesapeake became affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System. The result of this collaboration is a multidisciplinary cancer center at Upper Chesapeake providing services for enrolled patients.

According to uchcancer.org, the average cancer patient will make more than a hundred medical visits within the first year after diagnosis. The travel time for most Harford County patients is at least forty-five minutes to downtown Baltimore.

“One hundred of our friends and neighbors will visit the cancer center every day. Every day, one hundred people. It is a big problem and we need a solution. That’s what we’re working on, to get the center up and running to allow these people to be treated and not worry about the commute,” said M. Scot Kaufman,

Programs and services for multidisciplinary care at the center are as follows: A breast center for those battling cancer and benign breast issues. Diagnostic services, such as imaging and labs. Genetic counseling/ testing offered to include breast, ovarian, colorectal, pancreatic and/or uterine cancer. Nurse navigators  and social workers who provide support to patients during their journey through the health care system. An infusion center which specializes in IV treatments and chemotherapy. Radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and palliative care (comfort). Also, integrative therapies: yoga, massage therapy, reiki and Healing Touch/energy therapy will be offered.

“I’m looking forward to providing complete and ongoing cancer prevention and care for the Harford County community,” said Jenell Tavenner, Adult Nurse Practitioner for the breast center.
