Sheriff’s deputies shoot out; Couple receives four million dollars for damages

Just imagine relaxing in your bed, taking a nap after a hard day, and then having sheriff’s deputies raid your house without a warrant; meet the lives of Angel Mendez and  his wife.

According to nbclosangeles.com, October of 2010, Angel Mendez and his wife were taking a nap, when sheriff’s deputies barged into their home and began with open fire. The sheriff’s deputies claimed to be there looking for a wanted parolee, but want they failed to have with them was a warrant.

Reported by nbclosangeles.com, there were fifteen shots fired during the event. Ten of those shots ended up in the leg of Mendez and one of the shots punctured, at the time, his pregnant wife. Mendez’s wife feared that because of the trauma, that the bullet would have injured the fetus or caused severe damage, but lucky that was not the case. But due to the significant trauma to Mendez’s extremity, the leg was not able to be salvaged and was amputated.

According to nbclosangeles.com, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore stated that the firing of the sheriff’s deputies was justified due to Mendez having a gun and raising and pointing it at the deputies, which indicated for them to open fire.

But Mendez tells a different story, of how he was moving his BB gun from his bedside in order to get up and greet the officers.

“I think that police should have to wear cameras because you never know who is telling the truth and who is lying,” said Emily Slaby. “It would just be a way to stop all the hearsay.”

U.S District Judge Fitzgerald, ruled in the couple’s favor and granted them a rough estimate of four million dollars due to the disregard to their four amendment rights.
