  Traveling is something that many students aspire to do as they grow older, but Victor Fernandez started his journey to see the world at age 11.

     Fernandez (no relation to Spanish teacher, Mr. Fernandez) has departed from his home country Zancegoza, Spain, to join the Hawks of NH for the next year. Though he has been to places like Germany and several  islands for summer camp, this is the first time that the 15- year- old has been able to explore the United States.

     “I want to know new people, everything here is new for me,” said Fernandez.

     Though he is a freshman at Liceo Europa, his home school, Fernandez is taking a mixture of classes at North Harford, including physics, U.S. History and multiple language classes like French, German and English literature.

     “I like meeting the variety of people that are in all of my classes,” said Fernandez.

     Fernandez decided to come to America so that he could further his education beyond a European University. His school developed a program three years ago program where if students receive high grade marks and have a well developed set of language skills, they will receive grants to attend a university.

     “I want to eventually attend a university in Germany to follow my career,” said Fernandez.

     While in Spain he played sports like rugby and soccer ,and he now plays JV soccer for the Hawks. Not only does he plays sports after school his favorite class is team sports with Mr. Alan Banks.

     “Sports is my way of getting to know people, and keeping lasting friendships,” said Fernandez.

      His host family, the Carrigans, plan to take him to one of America’s favorite pastimes, a football game. He thinks that because it [football] is so important to Americans, it is crucial to attend a game so he can understand why fans are so addicted to it.

     “I want to go see the Raven’s play, of course,” said Fernandez.
