Mason heads to congress

While still attending school and holding the position as the captain of the debate team, senior Jeff Mason finds the time to be a page for congress.
During one week in the months of February and March, Mason will be a page for the House of Representatives, in the Maryland General Assembly.
“Basically I’m like an intern and I help the representatives do whatever they need done,” said Mason. “The cool thing is I get to sit in on committee hearing.”
Mason will be staying in a private housing development in Annapolis and will not be attending school during those weeks, and is doing this all for free.
“I don’t get paid, but I get $55 per day for food,” said Mason.
But Mason didn’t hear about this opportunity all on his own.
“Mrs. Jester was the teacher to introduce the opportunity to me and helped me with the application,” said Mason. “Also I heard that it was an awesome experience from former students like Drew Becker and Erin Chase.”
And the process to be chosen was competitive.
“The process involves filling out an application, followed by an interview process,” said Mason. “Then you play the waiting game, and wait for their decision via mail.
Also Mason will utilize this opportunity to advance in his intended career/college pathway.
“I think that this is a great opportunity and it could possibly help me in my college career and help me in understanding how the process of drafting and passing bills,” said Mason. “Also the experience of meeting important people will help me later on with networking and the experience of seeing government functioning will be priceless.”
Mason is also excited to adventure around the grounds.
“I think while I’m in Annapolis that I’m going to go cite seeing, and visit museums in the area,” said Mason. ‘I don’t know where I’m going to go just yet, but I am sure this will be an experience I will never forget.”
But Mason’s parents and teachers are not the only people proud of his accomplishments.
“I am so proud of Jeff and hope that he has a fulfilling and great time in Annapolis,” senior Emily Slaby. “I hope that this trip helps him in his future in politics .”
