Senior years ends with highly anticipated events

As the class of 2014 nears the end of its 12 year stint in the HCPS school system, these students will be partaking in numerous events that will leave them reminiscing about happy memories.

On April 26, 2014, the upperclassman found themselves dressed in their finest for the Bright Lights Big City prom at Valley Mansion in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The night went off smoothly except for a little rain shower.

The prom featured DJ Russ, who played a mixture of modern music and classics. Prom goers who were not on the dance floor could be found enjoying a wide variety of fruity drinks and food including garlic mashed potatoes, chicken, and an ice cream bar.

“I thought prom was excellent. The food was good and I really like how the DJ was very energetic, it pumped me up,” said senior Jordan Borkowski.

Prom court was assembled and announced by 10:30, and moments later, Juliet Dolinar was crowned Prom Queen and Mike Boyko was crowned Prom King.

“It was awesome and it was a total shock, I did not realize many people liked me that much and I feel so honored. Juliet winning Prom Queen was awesome and she definitely deserved to win. I will remember it for the rest of my life, it was a great night,” said senior Mike Boyko.

On Thursday, May 22, the students who excelled in their years of study will be rewarded for their effort at the senior awards ceremony. Seniors will be notified if they are to attend the ceremony about a week before the event by Mr. Ed Herbold via phone. Seniors who are notified will be asked to report to the auditorium at 6pm in their cap and gown. Roughly one-third of the senior class will be recognized for different awards like scholarships, SGA, presidential awards, etc.

“I think that the awards assembly is really important because students are recognized for all their hard work for the past four years,” said Mark Szot.

After the seniors last day of school (May 22), they will report to the school at 8:15 in the morning to take over the ‘Sweetest Place on Earth”. Students will have plenty of time to get their fill of roller coasters and sweets at Hershey Park before they board the bus at 7pm and return home. They will have the weekend to recuperate before having their final graduation rehearsal May 27 at 9am.

“I cannot wait to spend the whole day with my friends and enjoying all of the rides that Hershey Park has to offer,” said senior Joey Miller.

After rehearsal the seniors will celebrate one of their last days together in Rocks State Park at the 4-H center from 12pm-4pm for the annual Senior Picnic. It will be catered by Sterling Caters and the donations made by parents and students.

“The Senior Picnic has always been fun and it gives the students a chance to participate in a wide range of activities like fishing and swimming. It’s an awesome opportunity for students to be together one last time before they all separate. Almost Certain is coming back to perform and it is really nice that local businesses are coming out to support us and that people are making donations,” said coordinator Ms. Linda Duncan.

Seniors sprint their way to the finish line of their high school career at the APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College at 6:30pm. They need to report to HCC at 5:30pm in their caps and gowns and ready to begin the rest of their lives.
“I am so ready for graduation. I cannot wait to be independent, meet new people and start a new chapter in my life,” said senior Megan Tidey.
