Kurek for president

North Harford’s newest teacher is hardly new. She’s lived in the Harford County community since she was two years old. Jennifer Kurek teaches regular and honors chemistry, which makes perfect sense considering she has a Master of Science degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Delaware.

“Seeing students understand something for the first time- seeing that “click” happen in their minds- that is the best moment in the world as a teacher . I also love making my students laugh. You should always have fun while you’re learning- evening if you’re learning the not-so-fun stuff,” said Kurek.

Kurek hopes her students would describe her as ‘different’ because she strives to offer a new experience for students. A fact students of Kurek would be surprised to learn is that she’s never flown on an airplane.

All teachers have specific challenges, Kurek feels her particular kryptonite is keeping her students engaged in the subject material.

“I find that the more interesting you make the subject, the more naturally curious the students become. That’s what I’m after- tapping into that curiosity. Once you do that, you have a whole different dynamic in the classroom,” said Kurek.

Kurek feels the most pleasant surprise she’s had at North Harford is the amount of support from her fellow teachers and students. The only complaint Kurek has is the temperature of her room. Bundle up Kurek, you’re here for the long haul.
