Lending a helping hand: teens travel to take care of others

After building houses, fixing floors, and helping children who are less fortunate in our own community, some North Harford students dedicated their summer and time to helping those in need far from home.

Two juniors, Katie Campbell and Megan Owens, went to Tazewell, Virginia, to build houses for the Appalachian Service Project. The girls when to Tazewell for a week in July and helped build ramps and houses for those who are less fortunate. Both students are going back next year, because it impacted them so much.

“You realize how much you take for granted,” said Junior Katie Campbell.

Brother and sister freshmen duo Jacob and Bethany Birchfield went to a town in Kentucky where they  helped people restore their rundown homes by building rooms and putting in new floors. They both went to Kentucky for a week and learned about the trip through their church.

“It [the trip] made me think of what I have,” said Jacob Birchfield.

Senior Ryan Fochler helps those in his own community. Fochler is a part of an organization called LASOS which helps Spanish speaking children with their homework.  Since the parents don’t quite understand the homework either, Fochler helps the parents understand what the kids have learned. He also helps the parents and children learn English. He goes to LASOS in Bel Air, every Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm, and he heard about the organization from NHHS spanish teacher Carrie Rosales.

“When I’m there it makes more of an impact on the kids than me,” said Fochler.
