On Saturday, May 16, the Doers of Unique Caring and Kind Services(DUCKS) club hosted their annual spring yard sale took place in the parking lot of North Harford High School, as per usual. It was a day filled with fun, laughter, and great deals.

According to senior co-president Logan Reitz, the DUCKS club was able to make money off of renting tables for vendors and selling concessions. “Most of the money we raised went to charity, and we set some of it aside for senior scholarships,” said Reitz.

Volunteers from the National Honor Society arrived promptly at 5:30 in the morning to help set up tables and make sure individual spots for vendors were marked with chalk. Each year, members of the society donate their time to the yard sale in order to gain their seven points necessary in order to earn the NHS cord at graduation. Vendors began to set up their tables around 6:30, and the yard sale was open to customers at 7 am and continued until early afternoon. “We rented out about 35 spots for people to sell things…, so it was a very long and busy day,” said Reitz.

Compared to past years, however, the event was set on a smaller scale. According to Reitz, this was due to complications with other events held throughout the year. The annual DUCKS field trip to New York City, which was originally scheduled for late April, had to be moved to May 30 as a result of transportation and scheduling issues.

Also, the face painting booth, which has been a popular attraction in past years, did not continue on to this year’s event. This was because only a scarce amount of club members were available in comparison to the last two or three years.

North Harford alumni and 2013-14 DUCKS president Kristen Zdon has been offering assistance to co-presidents Reitz and Drew Vinyard, since she is a veteran when it comes to the annual yard sale. According to Zdon, the club sets a date for the event early in the school year, and afterward they “reflect on what went well and what needs improvement the following year.”

Although the yard sale is a great opportunity to raise money, it’s an even better opportunity to give back to the community. Through all of the hard work, Reitz agrees that the turnout is always a great one, and club members always look forward to next year’s event. “I love hearing thank yous from the community because they are excited that we put on this yard sale for them,” said Zdon.
