Like any good establishment, employees who work hard and who are committed to excellence create positive changes.  This kind of dedication was recognized at an awards ceremony held in Ocean City, MD, on October 9-11.

Mrs. Earline Klapka, the cafeteria manager, and her staff traveled to the Eastern Shore where they were awarded the Harford County Manager Of The Year Award .  According to Klapka, the award to the ladies is one out of seven states! Our very own representing our school.

Klapka explained that her staff has created a My-Way Cafe line.  “It was four separate lines. There was grill, Italian, Mexican, and Asian,” according to Klapka.

Though this is not her first award, these accomplishments have not clouded her from her vision about the school cafeteria. In order to promote changes in the cafeteria, she and her staff  have worked with many clubs and organizations within the school.

“We worked with the art department and they made wonderful signs to help us,” said Klapka. They have also put out suggestion boxes in the past for student feedback on what they should do for the students that they see everyday.

“We also promoted our breakfast line by making a commercial and having it displayed on the announcements,” said Klapka

Principal Colin Carr has worked in three other high schools and commented that North Harford does a great job serving good food and providing a wide variety of food to the students with a smile. “A school’s cafeteria is a very important part of the day and doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Most students take a good lunch for granted,” said Carr.

The student body appreciates what the ladies do for our school everyday. “That’s awesome that they won for the region! I definitely think that students take these ladies for granted, I mean they get here the same time we do and provide us with good food and are super nice,” exclaims senior Ligaya Corpuz. She also adds that the breakfasts have really improved in quantity and loves that there is more of a variety. “It’s good that we have a larger breakfast at our school since so many kids come to school without eating at home.”

Though many students walk through the line unaware of what is going on behind the scenes, athletic teams aren’t the only activities that can bring something to the Nest.

“I couldn’t have brought home this award without my outstanding staff!” says Klapka.
