Herron takes on county position

“I plan on going to another convention. April 6th through the 8t On Saturday, February 6, of this year at at legislative session at manchester valley high school, junior Hannah Herron competed to be on the State Board of Education, as the Student Member of the Board (SMOB).
Herron stated that “To apply, I wrote an essay on current issues facing student and how I would solve these problems, received letters of recommendation from 2 teachers, the SGA advisor and the principle. From there they narrowed it down to 5 people and we had an interview with the MASC (Maryland Association of Student Councils) Officers, Current state SMOB, and the executive director.”
“I made the top 5 and went to Legislative Session where the delegates from around Maryland voted on the state SMOB.” said Herron
“Meredith Parks was part of my campaign staff and helped me so much with campaigning. I couldn’t have done it without her! From Harford county we had 1 student from Fallston, Edgewood, and Patterson Mill.” Herron also stated
Herron was competing against four other people of this position. Junior Meredith Parks said “So everyone got paper and you had to vote for two candidates, but before we voted they had to make a speech.”
Herron did not get the position that she wanted but no big deal, she states “I hope to run for an officer position at the next MASC meeting in Ocean City!”
It was a long, long day “We left at like 7ish and we didn’t get back until it was dark so probably 10 or 12 hours long” Said Parks.
Overall “It was fun, when we got to Patterson Mill there were only five students from harford county, then we drove to manchester where there was 275 kids from all across Maryland which was like super duper cool.” said Herron.
“My favorite part of the whole experience was getting to meet all of the students, because Maryland is just so widespread and there’s so many different parts of Maryland that people don’t know about. There’s kids from the more urban places and the people like us from more rural areas.” Said Herron.
Herron got to meet a lot of different students and they all discussed major problems they feel their schools are facing. “One of the very big ones is the overpopulation and underpopulation of schools, for example at manchester valley high school which was built in 2009 and its underpopulated now they just recently closed down four or five high schools in Cecil County, and those students are going to be transferred to Manchester High School. So now a school that was once underpopulated is now going to be overpopulated. So it’s really cool to hear other schools problems and issues.”
h in Ocean City Maryland. There I will be running for first vice president. I want to go to Nationals in Portland Oregon sometime in June” Stated Herron.
