Childhood TV show favorite for many students iCarly returns on Netflix

VICTORIA HANNA, Reporter

Nickelodeon show iCarly, which aired in 2007 through 2012, landed on Netflix in February. This means that anyone with a Netflix membership can watch the first two seasons of this nostalgic show.

iCarly, which stars Carly Shay, played by Miranda Cosgrove, is labeled under the comedy section on Netflix. During the show, Carly creates a web show with friends after a video posted by her friend Freddie, played by Nathan Kress, blows up overnight.

The friends then go on to film and produce their own live broadcast, Carly, being the main star with the help of her co-host Sam (Jenette McCurdy) and cameraman Freddie.

The show itself has been nominated for five Emmys under the Outstanding Children’s Programs category. It was also a childhood favorite of many North Harford students. In a recent poll of 372 NH students, 89 percent said they have watched the show. Although the full six seasons aren’t out on Netflix, five out of the six seasons are available on CBS All Access.

Junior Josh Garrett says “iCarly was definitely one of my favorite childhood shows,” he continues by saying “and I’ll certainly be watching the series on Netflix again.” Sophomore Madalyn Rutch agrees, explaining how she’s already re-watched the first season because it’s “nostalgic.”

The series ran for five years, creating six seasons and 97 episodes on Nickelodeon. The show broke records, it even served as a launching pad for the spin off Sam & Cat which starred Sam, Carly’s best friend in iCarly and Cat, played by Ariana Grande who starred in the show Victorious. Sam & Cat as well as Victorious can both be found on Netflix for your binging pleasure.

The release of iCarly on Netflix was no surprise, this was most likely, according to Brandon Katz, a reporter for Observer, a strategic way to reinvigorate interest and familiarity in the show before rolling out a continuation of the show on a different platform.

Stars of iCarly Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor (who played Spencer), and Nathan Kress are expected to appear in the new version of the series, which is being released on Paramount Plus in March.

Student Valorie Radel says “I’m so excited for the new version coming out, I’ll probably binge watch it in one night.” She also adds a description of how she watched the seasons that came out on Netflix in almost one night. “It was my childhood favorite, and I think the new version coming out will surprise a lot of people.”

After iCarly was released on Netflix, it quickly climbed up to number two on the complete Top 10 list and Top 10 TV series on Netflix.
