1. Kwan-li-so No.22 Haengyong (Camp 22) in Hoeryong, North Korea
This prison holds men, women, children, and infants. Guards can do whatever their heart desires to these people except instantly kill them. One man says it the slowest, most painful death to be inside those prison walls. These prisoners have experiments conducted on them; a lot of the time it’s on infants. If women give birth in this prison, they are not allowed to scream or they’ll be beat until she stops screaming. Then, if the baby is born crying, the guards smother the baby until it dies.
2. Gitarama Prison in Kigali, Rwanda, Africa
This prison is one of the most overcrowded any prison has ever been with 6000 inmates in a building designed to hold 500. The inmates are so cramped that they must stand day after day which makes rotting feet common. Raw feces scatters the floor which also ruins the prisoners feet and toes. Most of the time their toes will fall off and the foot will get infected, forcing doctors to amputate limbs to save their lives.
3. Tadmor Military Prison in Palmyra, Syria
Guards in this prison are given total power over what happens to the inmates. Torturing, beating, hanging, and axe chopping are a few of the punishments enforced by guards. One guard is known to beat the inmates until they’re unconscious and then drag the body around until they die. In 1980, there was the worst prison massacre known at that time when all 500 inmates were killed by Rifa’at Asad military.
4. Drapchi Prison in Lhasa City, Tibet
Here, inmates can be immediately killed if they protest or even give a guard the wrong look. Prisoners undergo intense studies of communism and if they refuse, they can be killed as well. If a prisoner fulfills their sentence and lives through all the brutal beatings, they can be rearrested and brought back to the prison for a longer sentence with beatings much worse and even solitary confinement. One man was in solitary confinement so long that he lost his ability to speak.
5. Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña in Havana, Cuba
In this prison, the prisoners are treated as if they were animals. People can be arrested without warrant and convicted without trial. Political criminals in this jail are put in cells so small they can barely sit. All the other prisoners are encouraged to beat them with pipes and clubs.
