Darfur Genocide

Where: Darfur is a region located in Sudan, Africa. The country is below Egypt and about the size of France.

 

What’s happening: About ten years ago the Sudanese government waged war on non- Arab ethnic groups in the region. They sent Sudanese forces and Arab militias known as Janjaweed, meaning “devils on horseback,” to attack and destroy hundreds of villages in Darfur. Violence is still occurring today.

 

Attacks/ Deaths:  Over 400 villages were destroyed, 2,500,000 villagers were displaced,  and roughly 400,000 people have died.

 

Who’s responsible/ Leaders: The Sudanese government, who in 2004 denied the genocide was even occurring.  President Omar al Bashir and Minister of State Ahmad Harun  of Sudan were indicted in 2009 for directing the mass killing, rape and pillage. However the government has not surrendered either of the men to the ICC (International Criminal Court).

 

Facts: -70% of the population is Muslim.
