Ms. Melissa Sullivan is just one of many new faces students will be seeing around North Harford this year. Sullivan will be taking part in teaching in the special education department in this building.

North Harford is not Sullivan’s first teaching job, Sullivan has taught students before but never in Harford County until now. “I taught for five years in Howard County,” claims Sullivan, “Then I stayed home for 12 years and started a family and I was subbing in the meantime.”

Special education was one teaching opportunity that Sullivan loved doing, in her time off she was also working at home helping children with autism. “Between the subbing and the working in the home, those are like two part- time jobs, so I might as well put them together and go to work full-time,” Sullivan claims.

This year will be Sullivan’s first time teaching in North Harford High School, “I heard it [North Harford] was a really good school with a really nice reputation,” “I really like the new students, and getting to know my new students.”

In the special education department, those student have to be taught in more focused ways that in other departments in the building “we are doing functional skills,” which includes, “functional English, reading for comprehension, real life reading, reading newspapers and writing for real- life skills.” The students will mainly be learning major life skills that they will need later on.

The Hawks Nest is very proud of its new teachers and hope that they will continue to do promising things for their students.
