Out with the old in with the new: The College Football Playoff brings a change to one of America’s favorite sports

College Football

Division one college football will change the way they crown their champion in the 2014-15 football season. The old ways of the BCS and bowl games are gone and this year we will see the first ever college football playoff.

The BCS was a system where teams from the AP top 25, ranked by both coaches and computers, participated in a number of bowl games. The “BCS Bowls” were the top five most important games with the best teams playing in them. The BCS National Championship Game determined the College Football king and was the most important game of them all. The Aps number one and number two teams would face off in one winner takes all game.

North Harford football coach, Mark Filiaggi said, “The new system will work better because it will take away controversy. Everyone will have to earn their spot in the top four, when the computers picked it was sort of sketchy. This way the National Champion will be more legit.”

The BCS system was criticized by many former players, coaches and sports analysts. The biggest problem was that not everyone agreed with the AP’s decision of the “best” college football teams. In 2003, the title was split with the computers picking the USC Trojans as the number one team and the coaches picking the LSU Tigers.

Senior football players Evan Siegel and Scott Angstadt had much to say about the transition. Siegel said “The BCS was dumb because more than two teams could be undefeated but only two teams will get to play in the National Championship.”

Angstadt said “The playoff will be more interesting than the BCS to watch because the number three and four teams will have a chance to contend.”

Gone with the BCS is also the AP 25. A committee of 13 members who will serve three year terms on the board will pick the rankings for the teams. The top four will meet in semi-final games with the winners advancing to the National Championship game, which this year is being hosted at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The problem that most people see arising with the new system is the new emphasis on strength of schedule. In college, teams pick and choose most of their opponents, and if a stronger schedule is going to help a school get in to the top 25, then most colleges will pick tougher opponents. The scare behind all this is that good teams will only play good teams and teams that are not as good won’t be given a fair shot. This would mean the loss of the “Cinderella story” of an underdog team coming out of nowhere and shocking the nation.

Bringing in a new system also brings in many other changes to the atmosphere as well. The National Championship trophy will be changed from the classic “crystal ball” to a newly designed trophy that is very similar to the Lombardi Trophy that the NFL uses. As well as a trophy change, the College Football Playoff will also feature a brand new logo for the sport of college football.
