‘Monsters’ prequel astonishes fans

After 12 long years since the introduction of the beloved movie classic, Monsters, Inc., Walt Disney Pictures has presented a prequel to the movie in the form of  Monsters University. This movie has somehow managed to live up to the adoration and wonder of its predecessor and has satisfied kids and adults everywhere.

The movie follows monsters Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan from childhood to when they meet in college, portraying how the two become inseparable coworkers as represented in “Monsters Inc.”

Wazowski’s dream of being a scarer leads him to Monsters University where he hopes to study and major in “scaring.” The pair have completely different personalities and work ethics in college—Wazowski being the hard worker and studier without the natural talent, with Sullivan slacking off in school because of his talent at scaring. When the two are thrown into a competition together, they are forced to get past their seemingly clashing personalities to achieve their common dream—scaring.

Directed by Dan Scanlon, who was also involved in writing for the popular film, “Cars,” “Monsters University” follows true to its original and creatively puts together a storyline that matches the tune of “Monsters, Inc.”

“It was very cute and inspirational,” said North Harford senior Maddie Grebe. “Mike Wazowski cracks me up.”

Receiving a respectable score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to a superior 96% for Monsters, Inc.), the film has been received well by not only fans, but also critics. Since its release date on June 21, the film has earned $237.8M in box office sales.

The School of Scaring building resembles Hamerschlag Hall at Carnegie Mellon University. Additionally, the Monsters University campus is based largely upon the University of California at Berkeley’s campus, which is located very close to Pixar studios.

This film is as good as prequels will get, and although it does not outshine its original, it provides an enjoyable storyline that deserves praise.
