Not your average everyday meat

Name- Pink Slime

What it is- Pink slime is a product derived from the bits of meat clinging to fat, which are separated out by melting the fat away and spinning in a centrifuge.  They are then treated with ammonia gas to kill germs and added to ground beef as a filler.

Used for- Any type of beef filler

Effects- In large amounts, ammonia gas is toxic to the human body when in coming into contact with water, creating Ammonium hydroxide.  It can deteriorate organs and destroy blood vessels.

Long term Effects- none

Alternatives- Fresh ground beef not treated with ammonia

Find this in- In the past, fast food restaurants such as McDonlad’s and Wendy’s were guilty to have used pink slime in their cooking.  Recently they claim their meats are not slime free.  Any meat in a grocery store could contain pink slime.  Check the label before buying.

Amount in food- If used, a majority of the beef is pink slime as it is used as a filler.
