NHS races to help AIDS orphans

Project AIDS Orphan is a nonprofit organization supporting children who have been orphaned by the AIDS crisis in East Africa. All profits made go directly to Missions House of Hope, who supply food, clothing, healthcare and education to orphaned children in Kenya.

On November 22, Norrisville Recreational complex hosted the One World Run, a 5K to raise money for the project. North Harford’s National Honors Society once again agreed to volunteer at this anticipated event.

“Ms.Heinly [North Harford Middle School teacher], puts on the run each year to benefit children that have no control over their situation, and it’s just nice to be able to help supply monetary support them,” NHS president, Drew Vinyard stated. “Each year the NHS sends members to help the race run smoothly.”

NHS members signed up to either help with registrations, court marshalship or clean up. Members helping with the race were to arrive no later than 7:45 am with the race beginning promptly at 9:00 and a kids “fun run” at 10:00.

“Even though it was pretty cold, it was still really fun and we were able to help out a good cause,” senior NHS member Kaleigh Reese stated.

In addition to volunteering, many students from North Harford participated in the race, including senior Ben Dibastiani.

“I have competed in this race many times before,” Dibastiani stated. “It’s pretty laid back and a lot of fun.” Dibastiani was runner up in the adult race, falling to North Harford graduate, Calen Dowley, by only 27 seconds.
