Baltimore Opens Arms to New Coordinator

The last few months have been a time to forget for former Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, somehow flipping a 12-4 division winning Texans team in 2012 to the worse team in football (2-11) and being fired mid-season. But it gets worse, as he was walking off the field at halftime on November 3, 2013, leading the Colts 21-3, collapsed on the field on national TV. Reports show that Kubiak suffered from a “transient ischemic attack”, which is similar to a stroke. Shortly after recovering, he was fired by the Texans.

Gary Kubiak however has a chance to put everything back together. Less than two months after losing the Houston job, Kubiak was announced the new offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens.

“I’m excited to have the chance to build the best offensive staff in football” said John Harbaugh, head coach, in a live press conference, “Kubiak is the guy to do it, we all have great respect for him.”

Kubiak takes over for Jim Caldwell, who has moved on to take over the head coaching job for the Detroit Lions. Kubiak takes over an offense that had a down year in 2013, the Ravens finished 25/32 in total offense and injuries on the offensive line plagued bad seasons for Joe Flacco and Ray Rice. The Ravens scored only 20 points per game, and most of those points came from pro-bowl kicker Justin Tucker. This resulted in the Ravens finishing 8-8 (3rd in the AFC North) and missing the playoffs for the first time in five years.
“It’s a good hire,” said Emily Riemer, senior, “he was a solid coach in Houston and I hope he can spark the offense.”

Kubiak is the third different offensive coordinator for the Ravens in the last three years, firing Cam Cameron mid-season last year for Jim Caldwell gave Baltimore that extra push that they needed in order to win the Super Bowl in 2012, maybe Kubiak can provide a similar result.
