Brackets begin to fill as NCAA tournament heats up

The 2014 Men’s NCAA March Madness Tournament Bracket matchups will be announced on Sunday, March 16 between 6:00pm and 7:00pm on CBS Sports. Also called Selection Sunday, the favored teams will be picked and people will begin filling their brackets.

Many people create these brackets so that they can compete against their friends for bragging rights and money about who the best teams will be. There is also a national bracket that is filled which can lead to people earning a lot more money.

“I fill both the national bracket and ones with my friends, I have not won any money though,” said junior Brandon Tittle.

This tournament will involve 68 teams playing in a single-elimination tournament to determine who wins the national championship of the men’s NCAA Division I college basketball. The games will begin on March 18, 2014, and conclude with the championship game on April 7 at AT&T Stadium in Texas.

“I like watching the NCAA tournament because it is much more exciting than the NBA,” said senior Nic Hammer.

Professionals rank each team, and that ranking is referred to as the seed. A team with a high ranking is one that will likely go far in the tournament according to these professionals.

“I like watching the the NCAA tournament because it is more interesting, and they are not just playing for money like the NBA, they want to be there,” said senior Ryan Feiss.

The lowest eight teams will play against each other in what is called the First Four; the winners will advance on to the next level of the tournament. There are 32 automatic teams that make it but only 31 go straight to what is called a conference tournament. This is when multiple colleges play against each other under different governing bodies.

“I think that Kansas and Arizona are the top two teams because they have done really well in their season,” said Feiss.

Teams in the Ivy League do not generally make it to the final four, however, they often do compete in the NCAA tournament. Harvard has earned the spot this year as they have for the past several years.

The rest of the 36 teams will be granted “at-large” berths, which are granted by invitation, not right. For the teams that do not win their conference, the NCAA has an option of giving them a large berth depending on their previous schedule to give them some breathing room.

For the 16 teams that do not make the NCAA they will play in the NIT. While this is not as important as the NCAA tournament, it is still a part of March Madness.

Some important teams to watch out for include Wichita State Shockers because it has become the first team since UNLV in 1991 to go into the tournament undefeated, and they are 34-0. Florida State is also a top team to watch due to their ranking.

“I think that Florida and Wichita State are going to be the top two teams because Wichita is undefeated and Florida has also had a good season,” said Hammer.
