New faces guide fall sports into 2014 season

Last year was one of change, no more so than in the athletic department. The varsity football team lost Coach Ken Brinkman, girls’ varsity volleyball lost Coach Andrew Barrett, and cross country and track team lost Coach Eric Benjamin. The question of who would take the place of their former coaches concerned both the players and their parents.

Unlike other teachers, Brinkman’s leave was unexpected. Players were unsure about who would become the new coach.  Liebel, business teacher and former offensive coordinator, took his place at the helm.

“I think Coach Liebel’s a good guy and a good coach. He has a different coaching style and we have a new offence but I like it and I think we’ll do pretty good this year,” says junior Kyle Keating.

At the end of the year, Ms. Jen Bice, math teacher and head JV coach in the 2013 volleyball season, found out Barrett would not be the girls’ varsity volleyball coach. She soon told the team she would be taking his spot but was unsure about who would be taking hers. On the first day of tryouts, it was announced that Coach Natalie Crenshaw would be coaching the girls JV volleyball team. Crenshaw has a degree in health and physical education and is a 2009 graduate of North Harford High School.

“She’s really fun but she pushes us which makes practice more productive,” says sophomore Alyssa Blaise. “She’s doing more conditioning which also helps us during games.”

Coach Crenshaw’s mother, Bridget Crenshaw is a librarian at North Harford.

Over the summer, Benjamin made the last minute decision to leave North Harford High School as a teacher and a coach. If it wasn’t for Coach Ryan Bayne, Coach Laura O’Leary would have been left to coach the team by herself. Bayne is a social studies teacher.

“I think he’s very experienced because he’s coached all ages, middle school through college. He’s also very enthusiastic and has new workouts that help improve our performance. I think we’ll do well this season,” said senior Regan Davis.
