Sportsmanship: the Golden Rule of athletics

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship as conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing.

Sportsmanship is never easy. The competition on the field sometimes translates to interactions off the field. Sometimes even relationships between teammates can become challenging.

Like many other North Harford teams this year, cross country has been adjusting to new coaches and new team members.

“The cross country team’s sportsmanship has been a little off this year,” says senior Nathaniel Schott. “The team isn’t really what it used to be. It’s been a lot different, but we always try to make the best of it.”

The varsity boys soccer team has received several red cards within the last month.

“I got a red card during a game because I received two yellow cards,” says senior team member Cameron Brosh. “I kind of pushed a kid after the whistle; I lost my temper a little bit. Jordan Abuhantash yelled a cuss word that game too and got a straight red.”

After receiving red cards, Brosh and Abuhantash were required to take an online sportsmanship class, according to Brosh.

“The whole class was stuff we already knew, so it was sort of a slap in the face. But I guess it makes you learn from your mistakes,” said Brosh
“Sportsmanship is really important,” says Brosh. “I’m the nicest guy off the field, but I definitely got carried away that game.”
